MRI SCAN LOWER BACK

An MRI of the lower back visualizes spinal bones, intervertebral discs, spinal canal and nerve roots, spinal cord/conus, facet joints, ligaments and surrounding soft tissues (muscles, fat). It detects disc bulges/herniations, degeneration, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, fractures, marrow changes, infections, inflammation and tumours, and shows post‑surgical or inflammatory changes. Contrast may be used to highlight infection or tumours.

MRI is useful for lower back pain when serious causes (infection, cancer, fracture) or significant nerve compression are suspected, or symptoms persist or are severe or before surgery. For routine acute low back pain without red flags, early MRI is not recommended because scans often show age-related changes unrelated to pain and can lead to unnecessary interventions. An MRI itself rarely causes a skin rash. Most rashes stem from allergic reactions to gadolinium contrast, contact dermatitis from adhesives or pads, or very rarely heat/metal-related skin injury. People with severe kidney disease have a small risk of a gadolinium-related skin condition. Tell staff about allergies or kidney problems and report any rash or skin discomfort immediately.

MRI can detect many types of nerve damage, particularly when caused by structural problems such as disc herniation, tumors, inflammation, or compression. Standard MRI can show nerve-root compression and signal changes; specialized MR neurography and diffusion imaging better visualize peripheral nerves. Small or purely functional nerve injuries may be missed, so electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/NCS) are often used to confirm diagnosis.

Worry if MRI shows acute changes (bleed, stroke), rapidly growing or contrast-enhancing masses, spinal cord compression, signs of infection or abscess, or findings that explain new or worsening neurological symptoms (severe headache, weakness, vision loss, seizures).
