MRI Scan Hip Joint

An MRI of the hips provides detailed images of bones (femoral heads, acetabula) and joint cartilage, the labrum, ligaments, tendons, muscles, bursae and surrounding soft tissues. It detects joint effusion, synovitis, bone marrow changes (edema, fractures, avascular necrosis), cartilage loss and arthritis, labral or tendon tears, bursitis, infections and tumors, and aids treatment or surgical planning.

A hip MRI exam typically takes about 20 to 45 minutes of scanning time. If intravenous contrast or extra sequences are needed, scanning can extend to 30 to 60 minutes. Allow extra time, usually 10 to 20 minutes, for registration, changing and positioning. Total appointment time at the imaging center is commonly 40 to 80 minutes, depending on complexity and whether both hips are scanned.

MRI is generally better for hip soft-tissue issues — labral tears, cartilage damage, bone marrow edema, infection, and early avascular necrosis — because it shows soft tissues without radiation. CT is superior for detailed bone assessment, complex fractures, fracture healing and surgical planning, providing faster scans and 3D reconstructions but involves ionizing radiation. Choice depends on suspected problem, urgency, and MRI contraindications.

MRI of the hip can show structural causes of nerve problems—compression, entrapment, inflammation, masses, or scarring—and specialized MR neurography visualizes peripheral nerves better. However, standard MRI may miss microscopic or purely functional nerve injury; electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS) and clinical examination are often needed to confirm nerve dysfunction and assess severity.
