MRI Scan Hip Arthrography

A hip MRI arthrogram combines MRI with contrast injected into the joint to outline internal structures. It better detects labral tears, cartilage defects, ligament or capsular injuries, subtle fractures and loose bodies, femoroacetabular impingement anatomy, synovitis and early degenerative changes. Findings help confirm pain sources and guide treatment or surgical planning.

A hip MRI arthrogram causes a brief sharp sting when the local anesthetic and contrast are injected, followed by pressure or aching as the joint fills. Most people find it mild to moderate and tolerable; discomfort usually eases within 24 to 48 hours. Temporary soreness, bruising, or increased pain from joint inflammation can occur. Pain relief and rest are typically sufficient.

MRI arthrography is a specialized MRI exam where dilute contrast (usually gadolinium) is injected directly into a joint before imaging to outline cartilage, labrum, ligaments and the joint capsule. Performed under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance, it improves detection of tears, instability and subtle cartilage defects in shoulder, hip, wrist and knee. Risks are small and include infection, bleeding, allergic reaction or temporary injection-site pain.

An MR arthrogram is often better than a standard MRI for detecting small intra‑articular problems—labral, subtle cartilage, ligament or small rotator‑cuff tears—because intra‑articular contrast outlines structures more clearly. It’s invasive (joint injection), slightly more uncomfortable, and carries small infection/bleeding risks. A standard MRI is noninvasive and usually sufficient as the first test for most soft‑tissue and joint complaints.

Recovery after an MRI arthrogram is usually quick. Most people can resume normal daily activities within 24–48 hours. Expect mild joint soreness, bruising or swelling at the injection site for a day or two; avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours. Use ice and simple painkillers for discomfort. Seek medical attention for fever, increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, or if symptoms persist.

MRI is highly effective at detecting many hip problems. It visualizes bones, cartilage, labrum, tendons, ligaments, bursae, bone‑marrow changes, stress fractures, osteonecrosis, infection, tumors and early arthritis. MRI shows soft‑tissue and cartilage abnormalities better than X‑ray and is noninvasive without radiation. In some cases (for suspected labral tear) an MR arthrogram or CT may be advised for extra detail.
