Yes. Hand MRI can accurately detect arthritis by showing joint inflammation (synovitis), cartilage loss, bone marrow edema, early erosions, and soft-tissue changes that X-rays may miss. It’s especially useful for early or inflammatory arthritis and for assessing disease extent and complications. MRI helps guide diagnosis and treatment decisions, though it’s more costly and less available than plain radiography.

MRI can detect many structural causes of hand nerve problems—compression, swelling, entrapment, inflammation, tumors, or traumatic tears—and specialized MR neurography shows nerve signal changes and anatomy in detail. However, MRI may miss small‑fiber or purely functional damage; electrophysiological tests (EMG/nerve conduction studies) and clinical examination are often needed to confirm and quantify nerve dysfunction.
