MRI Scan Foot

An MRI of the foot provides detailed images of bones, joints and soft tissues, showing fractures, bone marrow abnormalities, joint degeneration and cartilage loss. It detects ligament and tendon injuries (sprains, tears, tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis), neuromas or nerve compression, infections, inflammation and tumors. MRI is especially useful when X-rays are normal but persistent pain, swelling or unexplained symptoms require soft-tissue evaluation.

You can usually walk and resume normal activities immediately after a foot MRI. The scan is non-invasive and requires no recovery time unless you received sedation, an IV contrast injection, or had an interventional procedure. If sedated you’ll need someone to escort you and should avoid driving for 24 hours. Follow the radiology team’s instructions and report any injection-site pain or allergic symptoms.

An MRI of the leg starts with removing metal and changing into a gown. You lie on the scanner table; a radiofrequency coil is positioned around the leg and the table slides into the magnet. Technologists run noisy imaging sequences while you must lie very still; ear protection is provided. IV gadolinium contrast may be used for vascular or tumor assessment. The painless, non‑ionizing scan takes about 20–45 minutes.

MRI is generally better for evaluating soft tissues (tendons, ligaments), bone marrow edema, occult fractures and infection, and avoids ionizing radiation. CT offers superior detail of cortical bone, complex fractures and is often faster for surgical planning. Choice depends on the suspected problem: use MRI for soft‑tissue or marrow issues and CT when precise bone anatomy or fracture characterization is required.

An MRI of the foot is generally painless. You may feel discomfort from staying still, pressure from the coil, loud scanner noise, or anxiety in the enclosed space. If contrast dye is used, there can be a brief sting or warmth. Sedation, padding, or breaks can help; report any pain from positioning or implants to the technologist.

MRI is effective at detecting foot infections, including soft-tissue abscesses, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis. It shows bone marrow edema, cortical disruption, and inflammatory changes, and with contrast can help distinguish abscess from cellulitis. MRI is more sensitive than X‑ray and useful when clinical or lab findings are unclear, though cost, availability, implants, or contraindications may limit its use.
