MRI Scan Fetal

A fetal MRI produces detailed, high-contrast images of the fetus and placenta, especially the brain, spine, chest, abdomen and other organs. It clarifies suspected anomalies—brain development, neural tube defects, lung and diaphragmatic problems, abdominal wall or urinary tract abnormalities—and assesses growth, placental position and extrauterine findings when ultrasound is inconclusive. It uses magnetic fields (no ionizing radiation) for improved soft-tissue detail.

Fetal MRI costs vary widely by country and setting. In public healthcare systems it may be provided free; privately in the UK it’s typically £300–£1,000. In the United States expect roughly $500–$3,000 (higher at specialty centers). In India costs commonly range from ₹3,000–₹20,000. Final fees depend on facility, urgency, additional imaging or specialist reporting.

Fetal MRI is considered safe for the baby because it uses non‑ionizing magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves rather than X‑rays. No clear evidence of harm to fetal development has been found when scans are done without intravenous gadolinium contrast. Gadolinium is generally avoided in pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. MRI is typically scheduled after the first trimester and used when ultrasound is inconclusive.

Fetal MRI is usually offered after 18–20 weeks’ gestation; it's most informative around 20–24 weeks for detailed brain and body anatomy. Scans can also be done later in the second and third trimesters—commonly up to 32–36 weeks—depending on the clinical question, fetal position and maternal factors.
