MRI Scan Face With Neck

A neck MRI focuses on the cervical spine and soft tissues of the neck and usually does not fully image the face. Portions of the lower face, jaw, or base of skull can appear if the scan field includes them, but detailed facial anatomy (sinuses, facial nerves, or brain) requires a dedicated facial, TMJ, or brain MRI with appropriate sequences. Ask your radiologist about scan coverage.

An MRI of the orbits, face and neck produces detailed images of the eyes, optic nerves, facial soft tissues, sinuses, salivary glands, thyroid, lymph nodes and blood vessels. It’s used to diagnose tumors, inflammation, infection, trauma, congenital anomalies, nerve and vascular disorders, and to stage cancers. MRI offers superior soft-tissue detail without ionizing radiation and helps guide treatment or surgery.

A face and neck MRI typically takes about 20 to 60 minutes, most commonly around 30 minutes. If contrast (gadolinium) is used, allow an extra 10 to 30 minutes for injection, imaging, and brief observation. Total time may be longer with additional sequences, patient movement, difficulty lying still, or need for sedation. Check with your imaging center for exact scheduling and prep instructions.

A head and neck MRI visualizes soft tissues, brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, orbits, sinuses, salivary glands, lymph nodes, skull base and major blood vessels (with angiography). It detects tumors, inflammation, infection, abscesses, vascular lesions, nerve compression, and congenital anomalies; assesses bone marrow and post‑treatment changes. Contrast-enhanced sequences improve detection and characterization of lesions and vascular abnormalities.

A brain MRI often includes nearby facial structures (eyes, nose, sinuses, scalp), so it can show parts of your face. Visibility depends on the scan’s field of view and sequences—dedicated head-and-neck or facial protocols capture more detail. MRI images soft tissues well and, in some cases, can be used to reconstruct facial features. Ask the technologist if you want your face excluded.

A neck (cervical) MRI visualizes bones, discs, spinal cord, nerve roots and soft tissues. It detects disc herniation, degenerative changes, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, spinal cord injury or lesions, tumors, infections, inflammation, fractures, and vascular or congenital abnormalities. It helps plan treatment by showing alignment, extent of nerve or cord compression, and surrounding soft‑tissue or glandular pathology.
