MRI Scan Cervicodorsal Spine

An MRI of the cervical spine visualizes vertebrae, intervertebral discs, the spinal cord and nerve roots, plus surrounding ligaments, muscles and soft tissues. It identifies disc herniation, degenerative changes, spinal stenosis, cord compression, tumors, inflammation, infection and demyelination, and subtle bone marrow or soft-tissue abnormalities. Contrast-enhanced MRI can better characterize inflammation, infection or tumors.

A cervical MRI is generally painless. The scanner itself doesn’t cause pain, though lying still with your neck positioned can be uncomfortable, especially if you already have neck pain. The exam is loud and may trigger claustrophobia; ear protection and cushions help. If IV contrast is used you might feel a brief sting or warm flush. Sedation or open MRI options can be offered for anxiety or discomfort.

Including registration, safety screening, positioning and possible contrast injection, total appointment time is typically 30–60 minutes and can extend to around 90 minutes for complex studies. Cervical spine MRI is generally safe and uses no ionising radiation. Risks include problems with metal implants or pacemakers (possible heating or movement), claustrophobia or anxiety, loud scanner noise, and allergic reactions or kidney-related complications (nephrogenic systemic fibrosis) from gadolinium contrast. Pregnancy is typically avoided in early stages unless essential. Sedation, if used, carries its own risks such as breathing problems.
