Breast MRI is highly sensitive and can detect many cancers—especially in dense breasts, multifocal or small lesions—and is used for high‑risk screening, staging, and evaluating implants. However, it isn’t 100% accurate: it can give false positives and occasionally misses some tumor types, so findings require correlation with mammography/ultrasound and biopsy to confirm diagnosis.

An MRI of both breasts typically takes about 30–60 minutes in the scanner. The actual imaging often lasts 20–40 minutes, but with intravenous (IV) contrast, positioning, and preparation you should allow roughly 45–90 minutes for the whole appointment. Times vary by center and if extra sequences or repeat images are needed.

A breast MRI cost varies widely by country and facility: roughly $100–$500 in lower-cost settings and $1,000–$3,000 in private US clinics. Many public health systems provide it at no direct charge for eligible patients. Contrast agent and radiologist/report fees can add costs. Insurance often covers medically indicated scans—check your insurer and local imaging center for exact pricing.

A bilateral breast MRI is done to more accurately evaluate both breasts when cancer is known or suspected, to screen women at high genetic or familial risk, to assess implant integrity, clarify inconclusive mammogram/ultrasound findings, guide surgical planning, and monitor response to preoperative (neoadjuvant) therapy or detect recurrence. It’s highly sensitive, uses contrast, and isn’t routine for average-risk screening.

The best time for a breast MRI is during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle—about days 7–14—when hormonal background enhancement is lowest. Postmenopausal women or those with irregular cycles can schedule any time. If possible, do MRI before a biopsy; if performed after biopsy, wait about 6–8 weeks for changes to settle. Avoid gadolinium in pregnancy unless essential; breastfeeding can usually continue.

If an MRI shows abnormal or concerning findings, your doctor will explain the results, arrange further tests (blood work, CT, PET, biopsy) or specialist referrals, and discuss treatments — medications, surgery, radiotherapy, or rehabilitation — based on severity.
