MRI ls Spine Contrast

A spine MRI with contrast (gadolinium) improves detection and characterization of infections, tumors, inflammatory lesions, active demyelination, and enhancing nerve roots. It distinguishes scar tissue from recurrent disc herniation, delineates spinal cord lesions and abscesses, and identifies leptomeningeal or vertebral involvement and vascular abnormalities. Contrast helps define lesion extent, activity, and blood–brain-barrier disruption for more accurate diagnosis and surgical planning.

Costs vary widely by country and setting. On the UK NHS an MRI LS spine with contrast is provided free; private UK fees typically run £300–£1,200. In India private centres commonly charge about ₹2,000–₹10,000. In the United States billed amounts often range roughly $400–$5,000; insured patients’ out‑of‑pocket depends on copays and deductibles.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (IV gadolinium chelates, e.g., gadobutrol or gadoterate) are used for lumbar spine MRI when extra detail is needed — to highlight tumors, infection, inflammation, or nerve-root enhancement. They’re given intravenously; allergic reactions are uncommon. Contrast is avoided or used cautiously in severe renal impairment because of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis risk. Routine lumbar MRI often doesn’t require contrast.

LS spine MRI stands for lumbosacral spine magnetic resonance imaging. It refers to an MRI scan of the lower back covering the lumbar and sacral vertebrae. The test uses strong magnets and radiofrequency pulses to produce detailed images of discs, nerves, the spinal canal, bones, and soft tissues. It’s commonly used to evaluate back pain, sciatica, disc herniation, infection, or tumors.

Spine MRI can reveal structural causes of nerve injury—disc herniation, spinal stenosis, tumors, inflammation—and may show nerve root compression or swelling. However, conventional MRI shows anatomical and indirect signs, not nerve function or microscopic axonal damage. Electromyography/nerve-conduction studies (and sometimes advanced MR neurography) are used alongside clinical evaluation to confirm functional nerve damage.

A full-spine MRI with contrast typically takes about 45–90 minutes overall. The actual imaging portion is usually 30–60 minutes, while added time for IV contrast injection, positioning, safety screening and post-scan monitoring expands the appointment. Exact duration varies by scanner type, the sequences required (e.g., cervical, thoracic, lumbar), and departmental workflow, so expect up to 90 minutes in some centers.
