MR Angiography Neck With Contrast

Contrast is not always required for MR angiography. Non-contrast techniques (time-of-flight, phase-contrast, arterial spin labeling) can visualize vessels well, especially intracranial and some peripheral studies. Gadolinium-based contrast improves vessel delineation and timing for many aortic, peripheral, or venous exams and is preferred when higher detail is needed, but is used cautiously in severe renal impairment.

MRI of the neck with contrast is a magnetic-resonance scan performed after injecting a gadolinium-based contrast dye to improve visualization of neck anatomy. It highlights blood vessels, lymph nodes, salivary glands, thyroid, soft tissues and nerves, aiding detection of tumors, infection, inflammation or vascular problems. Kidney function is usually checked beforehand; serious allergic reactions are uncommon.

Scans can be done with or without gadolinium contrast, take about 15–45 minutes, and require removal of metal. Risks are low, but contrast, certain implants, or pregnancy may need special consideration.

MR angiography can be done without contrast using techniques such as time of flight (TOF), phase-contrast, or newer non-contrast sequences (e.g., QISS) to image arteries; commonly used for brain, neck, and peripheral vessels. Non-contrast MRA avoids gadolinium-related risks (important in severe kidney disease) but may be less detailed for small or complex lesions; contrast-enhanced MRA is used when higher resolution or faster imaging is required.

Before an MR angiography, tell your team about pregnancy, implants (pacemaker, clips), kidney problems or contrast allergies. You may need a recent kidney function test if gadolinium contrast is planned. Remove metal, jewellery, watches, piercings and makeup; wear loose clothing without zippers. Bring prior scans and arrive early for IV placement. Discuss claustrophobia—mild sedation or open-scanner options can be arranged.
