A HRCT scan of the paranasal sinuses is a high-resolution CT that produces thin-slice, detailed images of sinus anatomy and bone structures. It helps diagnose chronic sinusitis, polyps, anatomic variants, fractures, and infections, and guides surgery planning. Typically done without contrast, it provides rapid, high-detail axial and coronal views but involves ionizing radiation.

Paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities in the facial bones around the nasal cavity: maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Lined with mucous membrane, they lighten the skull, humidify and warm inhaled air, contribute to voice resonance, and help trap and clear particulates and microbes via cilia and mucus. Blockage or inflammation of these sinuses causes sinusitis.

A sinus CT scan is generally not painful. You lie on a table while the scanner rotates; the exam is quick and noninvasive. You may feel mild discomfort from lying still or from nasal packing, and if IV contrast is used there’s a brief sting and warm flush; allergic reactions are rare. Some people find the machine noisy or claustrophobic. Radiation exposure is low.

Remove makeup before a CT scan. Cosmetics can contain metallic pigments (e.g., iron or titanium) that may create artifacts or mimic abnormalities on images, especially for head/face scans. For other body scans makeup often won’t matter, but follow the imaging center’s instructions. Also remove jewelry, hairpins, and other metal-containing items to ensure accurate imaging.
