HLA-B 51

HLA‑B51 positive means a person carries the HLA‑B51 variant of the human leukocyte antigen system, a genetic marker involved in immune response. It’s associated with increased susceptibility to Behçet’s disease and may correlate with disease severity, but it is not diagnostic by itself. Results are interpreted alongside clinical features and other tests; prevalence varies by ethnicity and geographic region.

The HLA marker most strongly associated with Behçet's syndrome is HLA-B51 (often noted as HLA-B*51, historically part of HLA-B5). Carrying HLA-B51 increases genetic susceptibility—particularly in people from the Mediterranean, Middle East, and East Asia—and is linked to more severe disease, but it is neither necessary nor sufficient for diagnosis and must be interpreted with clinical findings.

A positive HLA-B5 test means you carry a specific HLA gene variant associated with an increased risk of Behçet’s disease and related inflammatory conditions (especially some forms of uveitis). It is neither diagnostic nor predictive on its own—many carriers never develop disease. Clinical correlation and specialist evaluation are needed to interpret significance and guide monitoring or treatment.

"HLA‑B35 positive" means you carry the HLA‑B35 variant of the HLA class I proteins that present peptides to the immune system. It affects transplant compatibility and can influence susceptibility or course of certain infections and autoimmune conditions, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Clinical significance depends on context, so discuss results with your doctor or a transplant/immunology specialist.

HLA-B51 is most strongly associated with Behçet’s disease — a systemic inflammatory vasculitis characterized by recurrent oral/genital ulcers, skin lesions and uveitis. Presence of HLA-B51 increases risk and often predicts more severe or ocular involvement. It is not diagnostic by itself but is a genetic risk factor; occasional reports link it to other inflammatory/autoimmune eye or vascular disorders.

Behçet’s disease can be mild to life‑threatening. It’s a chronic inflammatory disorder causing recurrent mouth/genital ulcers, skin lesions and eye inflammation; eye, blood‑vessel, nervous‑system or gastrointestinal involvement can cause vision loss, clots, aneurysms or strokes. Severity varies; early diagnosis, specialist care and immunosuppressive treatment reduce complications. Regular monitoring is important to manage flares and prevent serious outcomes.
