HIV 1&2 (SPOT)

The HIV 1/2 spot test is a rapid immunoassay that detects and differentiates antibodies to HIV‑1 and HIV‑2 from blood (fingerstick, serum or plasma). It provides quick preliminary results—often within minutes—and helps guide initial management. Reactive results require confirmatory testing (nucleic acid test or laboratory immunoassay). Be aware of the antibody window period (typically up to 3–12 weeks) when interpreting negatives.

Early HIV can cause a maculopapular rash: small pink or red spots and bumps (flat or slightly raised), often on the chest, back and face, sometimes mildly itchy, usually short-lived. In advanced HIV, purple-brown raised patches or nodules (Kaposi’s sarcoma) may appear on skin or mucous membranes. Any unexplained rash with risk factors should prompt medical evaluation and HIV testing.

Symptoms don't reliably distinguish HIV-1 from HIV-2. Standard antibody/antigen screening usually detects HIV but may not differentiate types. To know which you have, get a type-specific antibody test or a PCR viral-load test that identifies HIV-1 or HIV-2. HIV-2 is less common globally (more in West Africa), often has lower viral loads and slower progression; tell your clinician about travel or exposures.

HIV‑1 is found primarily in blood and body fluids (semen, vaginal and rectal secretions), and in lymphoid tissues (lymph nodes, spleen, gut-associated lymphoid tissue). It infects CD4+ T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells, and can persist as cell-associated virus or latent provirus in resting memory CD4+ T cells and tissue reservoirs, including the central nervous system and gut.

An HIV‑1 and HIV‑2 test negative means no HIV antibodies, antigens, or viral material were detected, indicating no detectable infection at the time of testing. It strongly suggests you are not infected but may not exclude very recent exposure because of the window period. If exposure occurred in recent weeks, repeat testing at the recommended interval (often 4–12 weeks) and consult a healthcare provider.

HIV‑1/2 ELISA test costs vary by country and provider. Typical private‑lab prices: India roughly ₹300–₹800; the United States roughly $40–$150; the UK is usually free through NHS sexual‑health services (private clinics about £20–£60). Many public health clinics or community programmes offer free or reduced‑cost testing. Prices depend on lab, clinic, and whether antigen/antibody combo testing is used.
