HIGH RESOLUTION ULTRASOUND ABDOMEN

A high-resolution ultrasound uses higher-frequency sound waves to produce very detailed, real-time images of superficial tissues and small structures (skin, thyroid, breast, tendons, nerves, vessels). It improves spatial resolution to detect small lesions and guide procedures. It is non-invasive and radiation-free but has limited penetration in deep tissues and is operator-dependent for image quality and interpretation.

Abdominal ultrasound can detect gallstones, cholecystitis and biliary obstruction; liver disease (fatty change, cirrhosis, focal lesions or masses); kidney stones, cysts, hydronephrosis and renal masses; pancreatic inflammation or masses (visualization can be limited); splenomegaly; abdominal aortic aneurysm; free fluid or abscess; and some bowel or pelvic abnormalities such as dilated bowel loops, ovarian cysts or bladder pathology.

To get a clear abdominal ultrasound: fast 6–8 hours before the scan (no food, milk, or carbonated drinks) to reduce bowel gas and keep the gallbladder filled. Avoid gas‑producing foods for 24 hours and don’t chew gum or smoke beforehand. Wear loose clothing and bring prior imaging. If a pelvic scan is ordered, drink 500–1000 mL water about an hour before and don’t empty your bladder.

Abdominal ultrasound can detect many kidney stones, especially larger renal stones and indirect signs like hydronephrosis, but it’s less sensitive for small stones or ureteral stones and can be limited by body habitus or bowel gas. Non-contrast CT is more sensitive and used when ultrasound is inconclusive or precise stone size/location is needed. Ultrasound is often preferred initially in pregnancy.

Neither is universally better; choice depends on the clinical question. High-resolution ultrasound is cheaper, portable, radiation-free and excellent for superficial soft tissues, tendons, vessels and real-time dynamic exams, but is operator-dependent with limited depth and bone/gas penetration. MRI provides superior deep-tissue and whole-organ contrast, multiplanar views and is better for brain, spine and complex joints, though more costly and time-consuming.

High-definition (HD) ultrasound used medically is considered safe when performed by trained professionals and used only as clinically indicated. Research shows no proven harm to mother or fetus at diagnostic settings. Safety depends on following professional guidelines and the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable). Avoid elective “keepsake” scans, prolonged or repeated exposure, and always use qualified operators to minimize theoretical risks.
