Hepatitis A virus -Total (HAV- IgG)

Hep A IgG positive means you have antibodies from past hepatitis A infection or successful vaccination and are considered immune. It does not indicate an active or recent infection (that’s shown by IgM). IgG usually provides long-term, often lifelong, protection, so vaccination isn’t needed. If you have recent symptoms or a recent exposure, an IgM test or clinical evaluation is advised.

A positive HAV test (IgM anti‑HAV) indicates current or recent hepatitis A infection. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine and pale stools. Most cases are self‑limited; treatment is supportive (rest, fluids, avoid alcohol and hepatotoxic drugs). Practice strict hand hygiene and isolate until recovery. Notify public health—contacts may need post‑exposure vaccine or immunoglobulin; rare fulminant cases occur.

HAV IgM indicates a recent or acute hepatitis A infection — it appears early with symptoms and usually declines over months. HAV IgG indicates past infection or vaccine-induced immunity — it appears later, persists long-term (often lifelong), and signals recovery and protection against future hepatitis A. IgM = active/recent; IgG = immunity.

Hepatitis A IgG is an antibody marker showing past infection or vaccination, not a disease itself. Acute hepatitis A is usually self-limited and resolves without specific antiviral therapy; supportive care manages symptoms. There is no chronic hepatitis A to “cure,” and IgG indicates long-term immunity. Severe cases may need hospitalization, while vaccination prevents infection.

If your IgG is positive, it usually means past exposure or vaccination and suggests some immune response rather than active infection. It doesn’t guarantee complete or long-term immunity. Consider timing, symptoms, vaccination history and test specificity; false positives can occur. If you’re symptomatic, immunocompromised, or need confirmation, discuss further testing (IgM, PCR, antibody titers) with your healthcare provider.

Hepatitis A is usually an acute, self-limited liver infection that most people recover from fully within weeks to months. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Older adults and people with pre-existing liver disease face higher risk of serious complications, including rare fulminant hepatitis and death. Vaccination, good hygiene, and safe food/water prevent infection effectively.
