Gastroesophageal Reflux Scan

A reflux scan is a nuclear medicine test that detects abnormal backward flow (reflux) of fluid—commonly urine from the bladder into the kidneys or stomach contents into the oesophagus. A small radioactive tracer is introduced (via a urinary catheter or orally) and a gamma camera tracks its movement to confirm and quantify reflux and assess organ function. It’s low risk and helps guide treatment decisions.

Gastroesophageal reflux is diagnosed by clinical history and response to a proton‑pump inhibitor trial. If alarm features or persistent symptoms occur, endoscopy checks for mucosal injury. Ambulatory pH or combined impedance–pH monitoring quantifies acid and non‑acid reflux and links episodes to symptoms. Esophageal manometry evaluates motility and excludes achalasia; barium swallow detects structural abnormalities. Tests are chosen by symptoms and treatment response.

GERD in pregnancy is gastroesophageal reflux disease where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort and a sour taste. Hormonal changes (progesterone relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter) and uterine pressure increase risk, especially in later trimesters. Management focuses on lifestyle changes: small meals, avoiding trigger foods, elevating the head, and antacids or doctor‑recommended acid suppressants if needed.

A CT scan isn’t routine for simple reflux but is ordered when symptoms are severe, persistent, or show “alarm” features (weight loss, bleeding, difficulty swallowing) or to evaluate complications and alternative causes. CT can detect hiatal hernia, esophageal wall thickening, strictures, aspiration-related lung changes, masses, or mediastinal disease that endoscopy or functional tests might miss, helping guide treatment.

Timing depends on the specific esophageal test. A barium swallow (esophagram) usually takes about 15–30 minutes. Upper endoscopy (OGD) is typically 10–20 minutes for the procedure but with sedation and recovery totals 30–60 minutes. Esophageal manometry generally requires 30–60 minutes. A CT scan involves only a few minutes of imaging plus about 15–30 minutes for preparation and paperwork. Confirm exact timing with your clinic.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In India a milk (radionuclide reflux) scan typically ranges around ₹1,500–6,000 at diagnostic centers. In the UK it's free under the NHS for eligible patients; private prices commonly run £150–£400. In the US outpatient centers/privates usually charge roughly $200–$1,000. Always confirm exact pricing with the imaging center beforehand.
