FUNGAL SMEAR

A fungal smear is a simple laboratory test where a clinician collects material (skin scrapings, nail clippings, swabs, or discharge), mounts it on a slide, and examines it microscopically—often after KOH or special stains—to look for fungal elements like hyphae, spores, or yeast. It gives rapid evidence of fungal infection; culture or molecular tests may be needed to identify the species and guide treatment.

A fungal smear in urine is a microscopic test that looks for fungal elements—yeast cells, hyphae, or spores—in a urine sample. It helps detect possible urinary tract fungal infection, distinguishes contamination from true infection, and guides whether culture and antifungal treatment are needed. A positive fungal test means laboratory detection of fungi (yeast or mold) in a clinical sample—detected by microscopy, culture, antigen, or DNA/PCR methods—taken from skin, nails, sputum, blood, or tissue. It shows fungal presence but not always active disease; clinicians correlate symptoms, imaging, and cultures to distinguish colonization from infection.
