What is a Ferritin Test ?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. The ferritin test measures how much ferritin is in your blood. Iron is needed to make healthy red blood cells and to carry oxygen. Low ferritin suggests low iron stores and can lead to iron deficiency anemia. High ferritin can mean iron overload or can rise with inflammation, liver disease, or infection. Doctors use ferritin with other iron tests and a complete blood count to diagnose anemia, monitor iron treatment, or check for conditions like hemochromatosis. Results help guide treatment and track response over time.

Why Take a Ferritin Test ?

Ferritin is often included in iron studies or anemia panels and ordered with a CBC. Your doctor may request it if you have fatigue, pallor, heavy menstrual bleeding, or signs of liver disease. What happens if ferritin is low?plus

Low ferritin means depleted iron stores and often signals early iron deficiency. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, breathlessness, pale skin, hair loss, brittle nails, restless legs and pica. If untreated it can progress to iron‑deficiency anemia (low hemoglobin). Causes include poor intake, blood loss or malabsorption. Diagnosis is by blood tests; treatment involves oral or IV iron, diet changes and treating the cause.

What is the problem if ferritin is high?plus

High ferritin usually signals iron overload (hereditary hemochromatosis) or an acute‑phase response to inflammation, infection, liver disease, metabolic syndrome, or malignancy. It can be linked to fatigue, joint pain, abnormal liver tests, diabetes, or heart problems. Evaluation includes repeating ferritin, checking transferrin saturation and liver function, and genetic testing when indicated; treatment targets the underlying cause, often phlebotomy.

What does ferritin do in the body?plus

Ferritin is the primary iron-storage protein that stores iron safely inside cells and releases it when the body needs it for red blood cell production, energy metabolism and DNA synthesis. By sequestering free iron, ferritin prevents oxidative damage. It’s abundant in the liver, spleen and bone marrow; small amounts circulate in blood and serum ferritin levels are used clinically to assess iron stores.

How to ferritin increase?plus

Increase ferritin by eating iron-rich foods (red meat, poultry, fish, legumes, fortified cereals, leafy greens) and pairing them with vitamin C (citrus, peppers) to boost absorption. Avoid tea, coffee and calcium at meals. Use prescribed oral iron supplements if levels are low and identify/treat causes like blood loss. Check and correct B12/folate deficiencies and repeat blood tests per your clinician’s advice.

What diseases are linked to low ferritin?plus

Low ferritin commonly indicates iron deficiency and is linked to iron‑deficiency anemia. It’s associated with fatigue, impaired concentration and cognitive development in children, restless legs syndrome, hair loss and brittle nails, increased infection risk, poor exercise tolerance and worsening heart failure, and adverse pregnancy outcomes (preterm birth, low birth weight). Prompt diagnosis and iron repletion can prevent complications.

Does low ferritin affect sleep?plus

Yes—low ferritin (low iron stores) can affect sleep. It’s linked to restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements, causing trouble falling asleep, frequent awakenings, and daytime fatigue—even when hemoglobin is normal. Treating iron deficiency often improves symptoms. Evaluation and management by a healthcare professional are recommended to find the cause and choose appropriate supplementation.
