Ethanol is used as the alcohol in beverages, a topical antiseptic and disinfectant (including hand sanitizers), a solvent and preservative in pharmaceuticals and laboratories, and an industrial feedstock for chemicals. It’s also used as a biofuel or fuel additive and in personal care products and tinctures. In high concentrations or amounts, ethanol is toxic if ingested or absorbed.

The chemical formula of ethanol is C2H5OH, commonly written as CH3CH2OH. It consists of two carbon atoms bonded in an ethyl group (CH3–CH2) with a terminal hydroxyl (–OH) group, classifying it as a primary alcohol. Its molecular formula is C2H6O, giving a molar mass of about 46.07 g·mol−1.
