DOPPLER ULTRASOUND NECK

A Doppler test for the neck (carotid Doppler ultrasound) is a non‑invasive scan using sound waves to image the carotid arteries and measure blood flow, direction, and speed. It detects narrowing, plaques, or blockages that increase stroke risk. The painless, radiation‑free exam usually takes 15 to 30 minutes and helps guide treatment or further testing if significant stenosis is found.

A blocked artery in the neck (carotid artery) may cause sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, trouble speaking or understanding speech, sudden vision loss or blurred vision, dizziness, difficulty walking, loss of balance or coordination, severe headache, or temporary stroke-like symptoms (TIA). Some people are asymptomatic until a TIA or stroke occurs; seek emergency care for sudden signs.

A doctor orders a carotid Doppler to evaluate blood flow in the carotid arteries and detect narrowing (stenosis), plaque, or occlusion that increases stroke risk. It's used after symptoms like transient ischemic attack, sudden weakness, numbness, speech or vision changes, or when a carotid bruit is heard. It also monitors known carotid disease and assesses results after surgery or stenting.

A carotid Doppler is a non‑invasive ultrasound exam and is generally not painful. A gel is applied and a probe presses against the neck; you may feel mild pressure or brief discomfort where the probe is held. The test involves no radiation and requires no recovery. Rarely, firm pressure near the carotid sinus can cause lightheadedness, which the technologist will monitor.

Costs vary by country and setting. In India, outpatient neck Doppler scans typically cost about ₹500–₹3,000. In the United States billed charges commonly range from about $200–$1,200 (often $300–$900 after insurance). In the UK the scan is free on the NHS; private scans usually cost around £80–£300. Hospital or emergency studies and specialist centres may charge more.

A positive Doppler test indicates abnormal blood flow—commonly a clot (deep vein thrombosis) or arterial narrowing/insufficiency. It prompts urgent follow-up: confirmatory imaging, assessment for pulmonary embolism risk, and treatment such as anticoagulation, thrombolysis, or vascular intervention. Additional measures may include compression stockings, limb elevation, pain control, and specialist referral to prevent complications and guide long‑term management.
