DOPPLER Single Limb Arterial

An arterial Doppler test uses ultrasound to assess blood flow in peripheral arteries. It detects narrowed or blocked vessels, peripheral arterial disease, reduced circulation to limbs, arterial clots or graft problems, and helps guide treatment decisions and monitoring. The noninvasive exam measures flow speed and waveform patterns, often combined with ankle‑brachial index calculations to quantify severity and plan interventions.

A limb Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow in the arteries and veins of the arms or legs. It detects blockages, narrowing (peripheral arterial disease), blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), and venous insufficiency, maps vessels before surgery or bypass grafting, checks pulses when handheld signals are weak, and monitors treatment or graft patency. It’s noninvasive and guides diagnosis and management.

Arterial Doppler for legs typically ranges from free under public healthcare to about $150–$1,200 privately, or roughly ₹800–₹5,000 in India. A positive Doppler ultrasound usually means reduced or absent blood flow—commonly indicating a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) or significant vascular blockage. Follow-up monitoring, risk-factor management and sometimes procedures (thrombolysis or surgery) may be recommended depending on severity.

An arterial Doppler (peripheral arterial ultrasound) typically takes about 15–45 minutes. Simple exams may finish within 15–30 minutes; more comprehensive studies, multiple limbs, or added measurements (segmental pressures, waveform analysis) can extend to about 60 minutes. Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow and can detect abnormal or reduced flow in peripheral or carotid arteries and assess valve function. However, it cannot reliably detect coronary (heart) artery blockages. Diagnosis of coronary blockages typically requires coronary angiography, CT coronary angiography, or functional stress testing.
