Doppler Left Upper Limb

An upper limb Doppler is a non‑invasive ultrasound test that uses the Doppler effect to visualize and measure blood flow in the arm’s arteries and veins. It detects blockages, stenosis, blood clots (DVT), vascular injuries, or poor circulation. A gel and handheld probe are placed on the skin; the scan is painless, usually takes 15–30 minutes, and involves no radiation or significant risk.

Normal upper‑limb arterial Doppler peak systolic velocity is roughly 50–120 cm/s in the brachial artery and about 30–60 cm/s in the radial and ulnar arteries. A healthy Doppler waveform is typically triphasic. Inter‑arm systolic pressure difference should be <10–15 mmHg. Values vary with age, vessel size and technique, so clinical correlation is important.

A positive Doppler ultrasound indicates abnormal blood flow—such as a blood clot, partial or complete vessel blockage, or venous insufficiency—depending on clinical context. Your clinician will confirm the diagnosis, order further imaging or lab tests, and start appropriate treatment (anticoagulation, thrombolysis, compression, or surgery) plus monitoring and follow‑up to prevent complications like embolism or tissue ischemia.

A limb Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in the arms or legs to detect problems such as peripheral artery disease, arterial narrowing or blockages, and venous conditions like deep vein thrombosis and varicose veins. It evaluates circulation for wound healing, leg pain or swelling, and maps vessels before procedures. The test is noninvasive, uses sound waves, and helps guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.

A Doppler test (ultrasound) is generally painless and non-invasive. Gel is applied and a transducer moved over the skin; you may feel mild pressure or slight discomfort if the area is tender. Internal Doppler scans (for example transvaginal) can cause brief discomfort. No radiation is involved and adverse effects are rare; tell the operator if you’re worried.
