Doppler Both Leg

A Doppler test for legs is a non-invasive ultrasound exam that uses sound waves to assess blood flow in leg arteries and veins. It detects narrowed or blocked arteries, blood clots, venous insufficiency, and measures flow speed and direction. A handheld probe scans the skin, often producing color images and waveforms. It’s painless, quick, and used for leg pain, swelling, ulcers, or circulation risk.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In India a bilateral leg Doppler typically costs about ₹700–₹3,000. In the UK it’s usually free on the NHS, while private clinics charge roughly £100–£400. In the US out-of-pocket prices commonly range $200–$1,200. Final price depends on test type, centre, and insurance or public-health coverage.

A normal leg Doppler ultrasound shows open (patent) deep and superficial veins with no echogenic thrombus, veins that fully compress with probe pressure, and normal color and spectral Doppler signals (spontaneous, phasic flow with respiration and augmentation on calf squeeze). There is no significant valve reflux or obstruction. These findings indicate normal venous flow and a low likelihood of deep vein thrombosis.

Leg Doppler (venous/arterial Doppler ultrasound) is generally non‑invasive and not painful. You may feel cool gel and mild pressure as the technician presses the probe or during compression to check for clots; this can cause brief discomfort if the area is tender. No radiation is used, and it rarely requires injections. Tell staff if you have severe pain or open wounds.

A positive Doppler ultrasound usually means abnormal blood flow—commonly a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), arterial narrowing/occlusion, or venous valve failure. In pregnancy, a positive fetal Doppler often confirms a heartbeat. Next steps: confirmatory imaging, treatments (anticoagulation, thrombolysis, angioplasty/stenting, compression), and referral to vascular or obstetric specialists; urgent care if limb ischemia or pulmonary embolism is suspected.

Blocked leg artery symptoms include cramping, aching or tightness in the calf, thigh or buttock during walking (claudication) that eases with rest; pain or numbness at rest, often worse at night; cold, pale or bluish skin; weak or absent foot pulse; slow-healing sores or ulcers on toes/feet; hair loss and shiny skin on the leg. Severe blockages can cause sudden, intense pain and limb threat.
