Doppler Both Eyes

An ocular Doppler test (color Doppler/ocular blood flow study) is a noninvasive ultrasound that uses the Doppler effect to measure blood flow and velocity in the eye’s vessels (ophthalmic, central retinal, posterior ciliary arteries). It helps detect reduced circulation, blockages, or vascular causes of visual symptoms, and guides diagnosis and treatment for glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, or vascular occlusions. The test is painless and done over the closed eyelid.

A positive Doppler test means blood flow was detected in the area examined. In pregnancy it confirms a fetal heartbeat and helps assess viability; in vascular studies it shows arterial or venous flow, helping identify blockages, clots, or abnormal circulation. A positive result typically leads to further assessment, monitoring, or specific treatment depending on the clinical situation.

Duplex ultrasound is generally better than Doppler alone for vascular assessment because it combines real-time anatomical (B‑mode) imaging with Doppler flow data, allowing visualization of vessel structure, stenosis, and flow patterns. Doppler alone can detect flow but lacks detailed morphology. Doppler may suffice for quick screening; Duplex is preferred for comprehensive diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring.

Costs vary by country and setting. In India a Doppler ultrasound typically costs around ₹500–₹3,000 at diagnostic centers. In the UK it’s free on the NHS; private clinics charge roughly £80–£250. A Doppler ultrasound is generally painless and non‑invasive. A clear gel is applied and a probe is moved over the skin; you may feel mild pressure or a cold sensation from the gel. Any discomfort is usually brief; people with sore or inflamed areas may be more sensitive. The test is quick, involves no radiation, and complications are very rare.

An eye ultrasound (ocular or B‑scan) uses sound waves to image internal eye structures when direct view is limited. It detects retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular tumors or foreign bodies, and optic nerve or posterior segment abnormalities. It also measures eye anatomy, assesses trauma, and helps guide treatment planning or surgical decisions when exams or other imaging are inconclusive.
