CT Scan Whole Abdomen with Urogram

A CT urogram provides detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary tract—kidneys, renal collecting systems, ureters and bladder—using non-contrast and contrast excretory phases. It detects kidney stones, tumors (including urothelial carcinoma), strictures, obstructions and hydronephrosis, assesses renal parenchyma and contrast excretion, and characterizes masses or traumatic injury. It helps evaluate unexplained hematuria and congenital anomalies.

A CT urogram is a dedicated, multiphase CT with tailored IV contrast timing (often noncontrast plus nephrographic and excretory phases) to optimally visualize kidneys, ureters, and bladder—used for hematuria, suspected urinary tract tumors, stones, or obstruction. A CT abdomen (±pelvis) is broader, assessing liver, spleen, pancreas, bowel, vessels, and lymph nodes for inflammation, masses, trauma, or other abdominal pathology.

A CT urogram typically takes about 10–30 minutes to scan, but the whole appointment usually lasts 30–60 minutes. Time covers registration, IV insertion for contrast, multiple imaging phases (non‑contrast, nephrographic, excretory), and short waiting periods for contrast to reach the urinary tract. Allow extra time for changing clothes, paperwork, and brief post‑scan instructions.

A CT urogram primarily images the urinary tract for stones, masses and obstruction, but it can show signs of infection—such as renal enlargement, striated nephrogram, perinephric fat stranding, abscesses or gas in emphysematous infection. It helps detect complications (abscess, obstruction) but cannot replace urine culture and clinical assessment; early or uncomplicated bladder infections may not be visible on CTU.

For life‑threatening CT findings, radiologists notify the clinical team immediately—often during the scan or within minutes to an hour. Urgent/STAT reads are typically communicated within 30–60 minutes. A formal written report is usually completed within a few hours up to 24 hours. Non‑urgent CTs may take 24–48 hours for routine reporting.

An abdominal CT scan visualizes abdominal and upper pelvic organs: liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and adrenal glands, stomach, small bowel and colon, bladder and reproductive organs (uterus/ovaries or prostate), major blood vessels (aorta, inferior vena cava), lymph nodes, mesentery, peritoneum, and adjacent bones. It detects masses, inflammation, stones, bleeding, and vascular or traumatic injuries.
