CT SCAN THORACIC SPINE

A thoracic spine CT provides detailed cross-sectional images of the mid-back vertebrae and ribs, showing bone anatomy, fractures, alignment, degenerative changes (osteophytes, facet disease), calcified disc herniations, bone tumors, and infections. It delineates spinal canal narrowing and bony causes of nerve compression but shows soft tissues and nerve roots less well than MRI; contrast-enhanced scans improve detection of infection or tumor.

A CT scan itself rarely causes a migraine. The ionizing radiation used doesn’t usually trigger immediate headaches. However, iodinated contrast given for some CTs can sometimes provoke headaches or trigger migraine in susceptible people. Anxiety, bright lights or other scan-related factors may also precipitate attacks. If you develop a severe or persistent headache after a scan, seek medical evaluation.

In India a CT thorax (non‑contrast) typically costs about ₹2,000–8,000. With IV contrast (e.g., CT pulmonary angiography) prices commonly range ₹6,000–20,000. Major private hospitals and metro cities are at the higher end; government hospitals and diagnostic chains are cheaper. Exact price depends on location, machine type, radiologist fees and whether contrast or urgent reporting is required.

A doctor orders a CT scan of the spine to quickly check bones and nearby structures for fractures after trauma, evaluate severe or unexplained back pain, assess suspected spinal instability, infection, tumor or metastasis, and investigate neurologic deficits like numbness or weakness. CT is also used for surgical planning, guiding interventions, and monitoring post‑operative changes when detailed bony anatomy is needed.

The most common thoracic‑spine problem is thoracic back pain, often caused by muscle strain and poor posture. Degenerative changes such as disc degeneration and facet joint osteoarthritis also commonly produce mid‑back discomfort. Less common causes include herniated discs and osteoporotic compression fractures. Symptoms are localized pain and stiffness; treatment focuses on activity modification, pain control, and physical therapy.

CT scans can show indirect signs of nerve damage—fractures, bone fragments, tumors, hematoma or disc herniation compressing nerves—and CT myelography can demonstrate nerve‑root compression. CT is not good at visualizing nerve fibers directly; MRI (or high‑resolution ultrasound for peripheral nerves) is preferred for direct imaging. Electrodiagnostic studies (EMG/NCS) assess nerve function and often complement imaging.
