CT Scan Temporal Bone

A temporal bone CT scan provides detailed images of the bony structures of the ear and surrounding skull base. It’s used to evaluate chronic ear infections, mastoid disease, cholesteatoma, temporal bone fractures, congenital inner‑ear anomalies, ossicular chain problems, otosclerosis, facial nerve canal pathology, and to plan cochlear implant or other ear surgery. It also helps detect tumors, bony erosions, and CSF leaks.

Symptoms of a temporal bone problem can include ear pain, hearing loss, ringing (tinnitus), ear discharge or bleeding, and persistent dizziness or vertigo with imbalance. Facial weakness or paralysis, numbness, headache, swelling or tenderness around the ear, and nausea or vomiting may occur. In severe cases, clear fluid leaking from the ear (possible CSF) or fever indicate urgent medical attention.

A temporal bone CT scan typically takes about five to fifteen minutes for the actual imaging. Including registration, positioning and brief review, plan for fifteen to thirty minutes at the radiology department. If contrast is required, allow extra time for IV placement and observation, which can extend the visit to thirty to sixty minutes. Timing varies by facility.

A temporal bone CT exposes you to ionizing radiation, slightly raising lifetime cancer risk—especially with repeated scans, in children, or during pregnancy. If IV contrast is used, there’s a small risk of allergic reaction and kidney injury. Incidental findings can lead to further tests and anxiety. Sedation for children adds anesthesia-related risks. Overall, risks are low when clinically justified.

Costs vary by country and provider: in the US a temporal bone CT commonly runs about $300–$3,000 depending on facility and radiology fees; in the UK it’s free on the NHS but private scans cost roughly £200–£700; in India prices commonly range ₹1,500–₹8,000. Final price depends on high‑resolution technique, contrast use, reporting fees and location.

CT scanning provides excellent spatial resolution and high accuracy for detecting bony abnormalities of the temporal bone—fractures, ossicular chain defects, and erosions. It is less reliable for soft-tissue characterization (e.g., active cholesteatoma), where MRI is preferable. Combined with clinical assessment and audiology, CT is a sensitive and specific tool for most temporal bone bony pathologies.
