Costs vary by country and facility: in India a scrotal CT typically ranges from ₹1,500–₹6,000; in the United States private CTs commonly cost about $300–$3,000 (higher with contrast or hospital billing); in the UK it’s free on the NHS or about £250–£800 privately. Note scrotal ultrasound is the usual, cheaper first-line test.

CT scans are not the first-line test for detecting primary testicular cancer; scrotal ultrasound is the preferred, sensitive method for identifying intratesticular masses. CT is commonly used for staging and follow-up to detect spread to retroperitoneal lymph nodes, abdomen and chest (lungs). Blood tumour markers aid diagnosis and monitoring. CT may miss small primary lesions within the testis.

Scrotal ultrasound (high-frequency with color Doppler) is the best scan for evaluating the scrotum. It’s non-invasive, radiation-free, widely available, and gives detailed images of testes, epididymis and surrounding tissues. Doppler assesses blood flow to detect torsion, inflammation or masses and helps distinguish cystic from solid lesions. It’s the first-line imaging for pain, swelling or palpable lumps.

High-resolution scrotal ultrasound with color Doppler is the best first-line test for scrotal problems. It accurately assesses testicular blood flow (critical for torsion), inflammation, masses, hydrocele, and varicocele. If cancer is suspected, ultrasound is followed by serum tumor markers (AFP, β‑hCG, LDH) and staging imaging as needed. Clinical exam guides urgency and referral.

Scrotal ultrasound is a non-invasive, generally painless test. Warm gel and a small probe are used to image the scrotum; you may feel mild pressure or discomfort, especially if the area is tender from infection, inflammation, or recent injury. It’s quick, uses no radiation, and usually needs no anaesthetic. Tell the sonographer if you’re uncomfortable so they can adjust technique.

MRI scans are generally more costly than CT scans. Higher prices reflect more expensive equipment, longer scan times, greater operating and maintenance costs, and specialized staff. Costs also rise if contrast agents or advanced sequences are needed. Actual price depends on country, facility, urgency, and complexity—CT remains cheaper for many routine exams, while MRI is pricier for detailed soft-tissue imaging.
