A shoulder CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of bone, showing fractures, bone fragments, joint alignment, osteoarthritis changes, bone tumors, cysts and calcifications. It can detect dislocation, evaluate surgical hardware, and reveal bony effects of infection or chronic degeneration; soft tissues (muscles, tendons, labrum) are less well visualized than MRI, though calcified tendons and large effusions may be seen.

For shoulder pain, start with an X‑ray to detect fractures, dislocation or arthritis. Ultrasound is best for assessing rotator cuff and dynamic tendon problems. MRI provides the most detailed evaluation of soft tissues (rotator cuff, labrum, cartilage) and is preferred when symptoms persist, complex injury is suspected, or surgical planning is needed. The right shoulder CT is usually done with the patient supine, head‑first in the scanner, and the right arm placed by the side in a neutral or slightly externally rotated position (hand resting on the thigh). The affected shoulder is centered in the gantry; immobilization pads may be used to minimize movement. Exact positioning can vary slightly with the clinical indication.

If contrast, 3D reconstructions, or scans at premium hospitals are required, expect about ₹4,000–₹10,000 or more. A shoulder CT scan usually takes about 10–30 minutes from arrival to finish. The actual image acquisition is quick—often 5–10 minutes—but positioning, planning images, and any intravenous contrast injection can add time, so expect the whole appointment to be roughly 15–30 minutes. Discuss contrast needs or mobility limits with staff beforehand.

MRI is generally better for shoulder soft-tissue problems—rotator cuff, labrum, tendons, and cartilage—and detects tears without ionizing radiation. CT provides superior bone detail, so it’s preferred for complex fractures, bony anatomy, arthritis assessment, and surgical planning. CT is faster and used when MRI is contraindicated or unavailable, but it involves radiation. Choice depends on the suspected pathology.
