A CT scan for the knee is a rapid X‑ray imaging test that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of bone, joint space and surrounding structures. It’s especially useful for detecting fractures, complex bone injuries, bone alignment, and surgical planning; it can also show advanced arthritis changes. The test involves small amounts of ionizing radiation and sometimes contrast dye to highlight tissues; it is less sensitive than MRI for soft tissues.

Costs vary by country and facility: in India about ₹2,000–8,000; UK private scans roughly £200–£600 (NHS scans are typically free if clinically referred); in the US typical private charges range from $300–3,000. A knee CT scan’s actual imaging usually takes about five to ten minutes. Including arrival, changing clothes, positioning and staff checks, the full appointment commonly lasts 15–30 minutes. If contrast dye is used, add time for injection and brief observation—typically another 15–30 minutes. Complex studies, additional views or scheduling delays can extend the total time.

For knee pain, a plain X‑ray is usually the first scan to check bones and arthritis. MRI is the best test for soft‑tissue problems—meniscus, ligaments, cartilage and occult bone injury. Ultrasound can assess tendons, bursae and effusions. CT is used for complex fractures or when MRI isn’t possible. Discuss imaging with your clinician to match the test to your symptoms.

Most CT scans are quick: the actual image acquisition usually takes 5–10 minutes. Allow additional time for registration, changing clothes, positioning and, if contrast dye is used, IV insertion and monitoring—this commonly adds 15–45 minutes. Overall appointment length typically ranges from about 20 minutes to an hour, though emergency studies or complex protocols can take longer.

For a knee CT scan, wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners—shorts or loose pants with an elastic waist are ideal. Remove jewelry, piercings, belts, and clothing with zippers, snaps or metal threads. If you have a knee brace or implant, bring its details; you may be asked to change into a gown. Comfortable shoes and any requested paperwork are helpful.
