CT Scan Right Ankle Joint

A CT scan of the right ankle is a specialized X-ray exam that uses rotating X-rays and computer reconstruction to produce detailed cross-sectional images of bones, joints and nearby soft tissues. It helps detect complex or subtle fractures, assess bone alignment, joint injuries, infections or tumors, and aids surgical planning and healing evaluation. Contrast dye may sometimes be used to highlight blood vessels or infection.

A CT scan can detect many joint problems, especially bone-related issues: fractures, joint alignment, osteoarthritis changes, calcifications, bone tumors and complex anatomy. It is less effective for soft tissues such as cartilage, ligaments and tendons — MRI is preferred for those. CT arthrography and 3D reconstructions improve assessment of joint surfaces. Consider radiation exposure when choosing imaging.

A CT scan of the ankle is very quick: the actual image capture usually takes a few seconds to a couple of minutes. With positioning, planning, and brief instructions from the radiographer, most appointments last about 10–30 minutes. If contrast or extra views are needed, it can extend to around 30–45 minutes. You’ll be asked to remove metal and follow simple positioning guidance.

It helps detect fractures, bone alignment issues, infections, tumors and complex joint problems, and guides surgical planning. The scan is quick, usually painless, may use contrast, and involves small radiation exposure.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners (zips, buttons, underwire) and avoid jewelry, nail polish or piercings on the scanned foot. You’ll be asked to remove shoes, socks and any orthotics; a hospital gown may be provided. Bring slip-on shoes for after. Inform staff about implants, prior surgeries or pregnancy, and follow the imaging center’s specific instructions.

CT scans primarily show bones and can depict gross soft-tissue changes, but they have limited sensitivity for normal ligaments and tendons. CT arthrography or high-resolution CT can help visualize tears or associated injuries, especially with calcification, but MRI is the preferred modality for detailed assessment of ligaments and tendons; ultrasound is useful for superficial tendons and dynamic evaluation.
