CT Scan PNS Coronal Contrast

CT PNS coronal is a computed tomography scan of the paranasal sinuses reconstructed in the coronal plane, producing front to back cross-sectional images. It shows sinus cavities, the nasal septum, bony anatomy and mucosal disease, aiding diagnosis of sinusitis, polyps, fractures, tumors and surgical planning. It uses ionizing radiation; contrast is rarely required.

A CT scan with contrast for PNS is a computed tomography exam of the paranasal sinuses performed after IV iodinated contrast to better show soft tissues, blood vessels, inflammation, infection complications, tumors and bone erosion. It helps assess complicated sinusitis, orbital or intracranial spread and sinonasal masses. Preparation includes IV access and kidney/allergy checks; risks are contrast allergy, kidney effects and radiation exposure.

Most CT scans of the paranasal sinuses are done without intravenous contrast because non-contrast CT shows anatomy, sinus opacification, air–fluid levels, bone detail and fractures adequately. Contrast is reserved for suspected complications (orbital or intracranial extension), abscess, malignancy or vascular lesions. PNS in a CT scan refers to the paranasal sinuses—air-filled cavities around the nose. A CT PNS study provides detailed bone and soft-tissue images to assess sinusitis, polyps, mucosal thickening, fractures, or tumors. It’s commonly used for chronic or recurrent sinus symptoms and surgical planning. The exam uses X‑rays, is non‑invasive and quick; contrast is rarely required.

There’s essentially no recovery time after a CT PNS (paranasal sinuses) scan. You can usually resume normal activities immediately. If IV contrast was used you’ll be observed briefly, should drink extra fluids to help clear the dye, and watch for any allergic reactions. If you were sedated, allow several hours for recovery and arrange someone to drive you home.

A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses typically costs different amounts by country and facility. In India it’s roughly ₹1,000–6,000 at private centres (lower in public hospitals); in the UK it’s free on the NHS or about £150–£400 privately; in the US self-pay rates vary widely—roughly $200–$3,000—depending on facility, insurance coverage, use of contrast and exam complexity.
