CT Scan Orbit Coronal

A CT scan of the orbits uses axial and coronal imaging planes to evaluate the eye sockets, globes, optic nerves and orbital bones. Axial images are horizontal slices ideal for assessing globe position, optic nerve course and intracranial extension; coronal images are vertical front-to-back slices that better show orbital roof/floor, medial and lateral walls, sinuses, fractures and soft‑tissue lesions. Scans may be done with or without contrast.

In CT, coronal refers to images acquired or reconstructed in a vertical plane that divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) portions. Coronal slices show structures from head to feet in a front-to-back orientation, helping visualize relationships between organs, bones and soft tissues. This view is especially useful for assessing the sinuses, chest, abdomen, spine and extent of lesions across the anterior–posterior axis.

An orbit CT scan is a specialized computed tomography exam that produces detailed cross-sectional X‑ray images of the eye sockets, orbital bones, muscles, optic nerves and surrounding soft tissues. It’s used to assess trauma, fractures, foreign bodies, infections, inflammation, tumors, proptosis or optic nerve compression. The test is quick and noninvasive; sometimes contrast dye is used to better show soft tissues.

CT orbit scan costs vary widely by country and facility. In India it typically ranges from about ₹1,000–₹6,000. In the UK it’s free on the NHS for eligible patients; private scans usually cost around £100–£400. In the US self-pay prices commonly range from roughly $300–$3,000. Final price depends on contrast use, urgent timing, imaging center and city.

Axial (transverse) CT produces horizontal cross-sectional images sliced head-to-toe, showing superior–inferior relationships and commonly used for brain and abdominal imaging. Coronal CT produces vertical front-to-back images, showing anterior–posterior relationships and proving useful for sinuses, facial bones, chest and spine. Both can be reconstructed from the same scan; choice depends on the anatomy and clinical question.

An orbital CT scan itself is very quick — typically a few seconds to a few minutes of imaging. Including patient registration, positioning, instructions and image processing, expect about 10–30 minutes. If intravenous contrast is used, add time for injection and brief observation (another 15–30 minutes). Complex cases or busy departments may lengthen the appointment slightly.
