CT scan of the eye socket

A CT scan of the eyes (orbital CT) visualizes orbital bones, eye sockets, eye muscles, optic nerves, eye globes and surrounding fat, and nearby sinuses. It detects fractures, foreign bodies, hemorrhage, inflammation or abscess, tumors, calcifications, and signs of optic nerve compression or proptosis. CT is especially useful for bone detail and acute trauma; contrast enhances soft-tissue and vascular abnormalities.

CT orbit scan costs vary by country, facility and use of contrast. Typical ranges: India ₹2,000–₹8,000; UK—usually covered by the NHS but private scans about £150–£500; USA out‑of‑pocket roughly $300–$3,000 (average ~$1,000–1,500). CT scans use ionizing radiation, so they expose the eyes—especially the lens—to some radiation. A single diagnostic head CT carries a low immediate risk, but repeated or high-dose scans can slightly increase lifetime cataract risk. An ophthalmologist may order a CT scan to evaluate orbital and ocular problems involving bones, soft tissues, or acute trauma. Common reasons include assessing orbital fractures, foreign bodies, orbital cellulitis or abscess, tumors or metastases, proptosis, optic nerve compression, sinus disease affecting the orbit, and preoperative planning. CT is fast and shows bone detail and sinuses clearly.

Retinal and eye scans can detect eye diseases and systemic conditions. Commonly identified: diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma (optic nerve damage), hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions and macular edema. Scans may also reveal optic neuritis and signs associated with systemic problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis and early neurodegenerative changes.

If a CT scan shows a serious or life‑threatening finding, radiologists perform an immediate (STAT) read and directly notify the treating team—often within minutes to an hour—so care can begin right away. A formal written report usually follows the same day, commonly within 24 hours. Outpatient, non‑urgent results may take longer to be released.
