CT SCAN OF MASTOID AND MIDDLE EAR

A CT mastoid scan is a specialized computed tomography study of the temporal bone and mastoid air cells behind the ear. It gives detailed cross-sectional images of bone and air spaces, helping detect mastoiditis, chronic ear infection, cholesteatoma, fractures, or congenital abnormalities. It’s a quick, noninvasive scan using low-dose X-rays; contrast is rarely required. Results guide diagnosis and surgical planning.

A CT scan of the middle ear is a high‑resolution X‑ray exam that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of the ear’s bony structures, ossicles and mastoid air cells. It detects infections, cholesteatoma, fractures, congenital abnormalities, tumors, and ossicular erosion, and guides surgical planning. The test is quick and noninvasive but uses ionizing radiation; contrast is rarely needed.

The middle ear cavity is anatomically continuous with the mastoid air cell system within the temporal bone via the aditus ad antrum and mastoid antrum. The mucosal lining is continuous, so air ventilation and pressure are shared; dysfunction or infection in the middle ear can spread into mastoid air cells, causing mastoiditis. Clinically this explains mastoid involvement in chronic otitis media and need for mastoidectomy.

Yes — a CT scan can show middle-ear disease by demonstrating fluid, air–fluid levels, mastoid inflammation, bony erosion or cholesteatoma and identifying complications. However, CT is not routinely required for uncomplicated acute otitis media; diagnosis is clinical with otoscopy. CT is reserved for chronic disease, suspected complications or pre‑surgical assessment. MRI is superior for soft‑tissue and intracranial extension.

Mastoid problems (mastoiditis) typically cause severe, persistent ear pain, swelling, redness, or tenderness behind the ear, and fever. Other signs include ear drainage, hearing loss or a plugged feeling, headache, irritability or lethargy (especially in children), and a protruding ear. Prompt medical evaluation is important to prevent complications.

Doctors order a CT scan of the ear to evaluate bone and air-space anatomy when complications or structural problems are suspected. Common reasons include chronic or complicated ear infections, mastoiditis, suspected cholesteatoma, temporal bone fracture, conductive hearing loss from ossicular damage or otosclerosis, congenital ear malformations, preoperative planning (e.g., cochlear implant), and to detect tumors or bony erosion.
