CT Scan Mandible

A CT scan of the mandible is a specialized computed tomography imaging test that produces detailed cross-sectional images of the lower jawbone. It helps evaluate fractures, infections, tumors, dental and TMJ problems, bone abnormalities, and planning for surgery or implants. The scan is quick, noninvasive, and provides higher bone detail than plain X-rays, sometimes using contrast for soft-tissue assessment.

A CT scan of the mandible typically requires about 5–15 minutes for the actual image acquisition. Including arrival, registration, positioning and technician prep, the full appointment usually lasts 15–30 minutes. If intravenous contrast is needed, allow extra time for injection and brief observation, extending the visit to roughly 30–60 minutes. Timing can vary by clinic and case complexity.

A CT scan can detect a jaw infection, showing bone changes (osteomyelitis), dental or periodontal abscesses, and the extent of soft-tissue spread.
