Triple-phase CT contrast is a contrast-enhanced CT protocol acquiring images during three timed phases after intravenous iodinated contrast: arterial (early, ~20–30 seconds), portal venous (≈60–70 seconds) and delayed/equilibrium (minutes after injection). This timing highlights vascularity and enhancement patterns to better detect and characterize liver, pancreatic, renal and other lesions, and to assess vascular anatomy and tumor perfusion.

A triple-contrast CT uses oral, rectal and intravenous contrast to provide detailed visualization of the gastrointestinal tract, bowel wall, vascular supply and adjacent organs. It’s used to detect and characterize bowel inflammation, perforation, obstruction, fistulas, abscesses, tumors and post‑operative complications, and to stage malignancies or guide surgical and interventional planning by improving lesion and vascular delineation.

A 3-phase CT scan of the kidney acquires three timed series—usually a non-contrast scan, an early post-contrast (corticomedullary) phase about 25–40 seconds after injection, and a later nephrographic/excretory phase (typically 80–120 seconds; delayed excretory images may be taken minutes later). It assesses renal parenchyma, tumors, stones, vascular anatomy and collecting-system opacification for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Triple-phase CT uses arterial, portal venous and delayed contrast phases to characterize tissue enhancement over time. It improves detection and differentiation of liver, pancreas and renal lesions, identifies hypervascular tumors, vascular anatomy and active bleeding, and guides staging and treatment planning. Timing differences reveal lesion vascularity and washout patterns that single-phase scans can miss, increasing diagnostic accuracy and management.

For a triple‑phase CT, wear comfortable, loose‑fitting, two‑piece clothes with short or easily rolled sleeves for IV access. Avoid metal: zippers, snaps, underwire bras, jewelry, piercings, hairpins, or clothing with metallic prints. You may be asked to change into a gown; bring minimal valuables. Remove hearing aids, glasses, and dentures before scanning as instructed.

A triple‑phase CT scan’s actual image acquisition is quick—usually 5–10 minutes—because each phase is captured within seconds. With IV placement, contrast injection, timed delays between arterial, portal venous and delayed phases, plus brief post‑scan observation, plan for roughly 20–45 minutes at the radiology department. In some cases, depending on logistics and protocols, the appointment can take up to an hour.
