CT Scan Hip Joint with Contrast

A hip CT is usually done without contrast when assessing bones (fractures, arthritis) because noncontrast CT provides excellent bony detail. Intravenous contrast is added when evaluating soft‑tissue masses, infection/abscess, tumors, or vascular problems (CT angiography). Oral contrast is generally unnecessary. The need for contrast depends on the clinical question and your clinician’s recommendation.

A CT scan of the hip provides detailed cross‑sectional images of the pelvic bones, femoral head and neck, and joint alignment. It detects fractures, dislocations, bone spurs, degenerative arthritis, bone tumors or infections, and evaluates prostheses or complex pelvic injury; with contrast it can help assess soft‑tissue collections and blood vessels to guide diagnosis and surgical planning.

A hip CT is performed with you lying supine on the scanner table, hips centered in the gantry. Legs are extended and positioned feet‑first into the scanner; slight internal rotation of the feet may be used to align the femoral necks. Arms are placed comfortably at the sides or above the head. You must lie still; immobilization pads and brief breath‑hold instructions reduce motion artifact.

A hip CT scan’s actual imaging typically takes about 5–10 minutes. The whole appointment usually lasts 15–30 minutes, including positioning and paperwork. If intravenous contrast is required, plan for 30–60 minutes to allow IV placement, injection and short observation. Factors like preparation, previous scans, or clinic workflow can extend the visit, so arrive early and follow any prep instructions.

Contrast CT improves visualization of blood vessels, inflammation, tumors and organ perfusion, so it’s preferred for assessing tumors, infection, vascular injury or perfusion studies. Non‑contrast CT often suffices for lungs, bones, kidney stones and acute hemorrhage, or when contrast is contraindicated (renal impairment, allergy, pregnancy caution). Choice depends on the clinical question and individual patient risk factors.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (no zippers, buttons, belts or jewelry) for a hip CT. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Remove underwire bras, hip jewelry and piercings; leave on nonmetallic underwear if allowed. If you have a hip implant, tell the technologist beforehand. Avoid creams or powders on the skin over the hip.
