CT Scan Face

A CT scan of the face provides detailed cross-sectional images of facial bones, sinuses, nasal cavity, orbits, and soft tissues. It detects fractures, sinus inflammation or infection, foreign bodies, dental and jaw problems, tumors, abscesses and bleeding. With contrast, it can highlight blood vessels and inflammatory or neoplastic enhancement, guiding diagnosis, surgical planning and trauma assessment.

A CT head focuses on the brain and intracranial structures (skull, ventricles), using protocols for stroke, hemorrhage, tumors or trauma—often non‑contrast with soft‑tissue windows. A CT face (facial bones/sinuses) targets the orbits, nasal bones, sinuses and dental structures with thinner bone windows and a narrower field‑of‑view; it’s used for sinus disease, facial fractures or orbital assessment, sometimes with contrast.

To prepare for a face CT scan, wear loose, metal-free clothing and remove jewelry, hairpins, glasses and makeup. Bring identification and referral forms. Tell staff if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease, diabetes (especially on metformin), or allergies to contrast dye. You may need to fast for a few hours if contrast is planned and drink extra fluids afterward. Follow staff instructions and remain still during scanning.

A CT scan of the face is usually very quick. The imaging itself typically takes 1–5 minutes; with patient registration, positioning and instructions the whole visit commonly lasts 10–30 minutes. If an intravenous contrast injection is required, allow an extra 15–30 minutes for cannula placement and contrast timing. Complex cases or radiologist review may add additional waiting time.

CT scans — including cone‑beam CT used in dentistry — provide high-resolution 3D images of jaw bones and teeth, detecting fractures, bone infections, tumors, developmental abnormalities and aiding implant or surgical planning. CT excels at bony detail; MRI is superior for soft-tissue issues like the TMJ disc. Consider radiation exposure and clinical context when selecting imaging.

A sinus CT scan is generally painless and quick. You lie still while the scanner takes images; you may feel mild discomfort from staying in one position or slight pressure from the gantry. If IV contrast is used, there can be a brief sting, warmth, or metallic taste. Claustrophobic or anxious people may feel unease, but the procedure itself typically does not cause pain.
