CT Scan Both Shoulder 3D View

A CT scan acquires cross-sectional X‑ray images (slices) of the body, displayed as 2D images for diagnosis. A 3D CT uses the same scan data with computer reconstruction to produce volumetric, rotatable images showing spatial relationships more clearly—useful for surgical planning, fracture assessment, and vascular mapping. Radiation exposure is from the original scan; 3D is post-processing and adds interpretation time.

CT scans visualize shoulder bones very well, detecting fractures, dislocations, bone loss, joint degeneration, bone tumors, and calcifications. They are less sensitive for soft-tissue injuries such as rotator cuff tears or muscle/tendon damage—MRI or ultrasound is usually preferred for those. CT arthrography can improve labral/cartilage assessment. CT is valuable for complex fractures and surgical planning but uses ionizing radiation.

Modern wide-bore and open-design CTs increase comfort and reduce claustrophobia; only the body part being scanned passes through the gantry while images are taken.

A 3D CT scan’s actual imaging usually takes 5–20 minutes. Including registration, positioning and briefing, most appointments last 15–45 minutes. If intravenous contrast is used, allow extra time for injection and brief monitoring (often 15–30 minutes). 3D reconstructions and radiologist review may add processing time, but images are typically available within minutes to an hour after scanning.

A 3D CT scan starts with positioning the patient on a motorized table; sometimes IV contrast is given. The table moves through a rotating X‑ray gantry while multiple detector arrays capture thin cross‑sectional images. A computer reconstructs these slices into a 3D model for detailed views of bones, organs, or blood vessels. The scan is quick, noninvasive, and interpreted afterward by a radiologist.

3D CT scans are generally safe but involve ionizing radiation, slightly increasing long‑term cancer risk. If contrast dye is used, possible side effects include mild nausea, flushing, itching or allergic reactions (rarely severe anaphylaxis) and, in susceptible patients, kidney injury. Temporary dizziness or metallic taste can occur. Pregnant women should avoid CT unless essential due to fetal radiation exposure.
