CT SCAN BONE DENSITOMETRY

CT bone densitometry (quantitative CT) is a specialized CT scan that measures bone mineral density in three dimensions. It assesses spine and hip BMD, distinguishing trabecular from cortical bone, and reports volumetric values useful for diagnosing osteoporosis and monitoring treatment. Results can be converted to T-scores. The exam provides precise regional assessment but generally involves more radiation than DEXA.

A bone densitometry scan (DEXA) measures bone mineral density to detect low bone mass and diagnose osteoporosis. It helps estimate fracture risk, monitor bone loss over time, and assess response to osteoporosis treatment. It’s commonly recommended for older adults, postmenopausal women, people on long-term steroids, or those with conditions increasing fracture risk. The test is quick, painless, and uses low-dose X-rays.

Bone densitometry (DEXA) is a quick, noninvasive, generally painless test. You lie on a table while a scanner passes over your body; there are no needles or injections and radiation exposure is very low. Most people feel nothing, though those with severe back pain or difficulty lying flat may have mild discomfort from positioning. The scan usually takes 10–30 minutes.

A bone densitometry (DEXA) scan typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes for the actual scan. Including check-in, positioning and brief instructions, expect the appointment to last about 20 to 30 minutes. If multiple sites are scanned or extra measurements are needed it may take longer. The procedure is quick, painless and noninvasive; wear loose clothing without metal.

Bone density (DEXA) scans are noninvasive and low risk. Radiation exposure is very small — about a few days’ background radiation. Rare issues include inaccurate readings with metal implants, arthritis, or vascular calcification, and equipment weight limits for very heavy patients. Pregnant women should avoid it. Mild discomfort from lying still and anxiety about results are possible; no recovery time is needed.

A CT scan of bone typically takes ten to thirty minutes for the actual imaging. Including registration, positioning and instructions, expect a thirty- to sixty-minute appointment. If intravenous contrast is required, allow an additional fifteen to forty-five minutes for injection and brief monitoring. More extensive or multi-region studies may take longer—confirm exact timing with your imaging department.
