CT Scan Ankle

A CT scan of the ankle provides detailed cross-sectional images of bones and joints, revealing fractures, bone fragments, joint alignment, cartilage-surface changes and arthritis. It detects subtle or complex fractures, bone tumors and infections, and aids surgical planning and fixation assessment. CT shows bone detail far better than X-ray; soft tissues and ligaments are less well visualized unless contrast or CT angiography is used.

CT scans are excellent for bones but have limited sensitivity for ligament injuries. MRI is the preferred test to visualize ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues. CT arthrography (contrast injected into the joint) can improve detection of some intra‑articular ligament tears, and ultrasound may detect superficial ligament injuries. CT is mainly used when MRI is unavailable or contraindicated.

MRI is better for soft-tissue injuries — ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone marrow edema — and for detecting occult fractures. CT is superior for detailed bone assessment, complex fractures and surgical planning; it’s faster and more available but uses radiation. Choice depends on the suspected injury: CT for bony detail/acute complex fractures, MRI for soft-tissue pathology or unexplained pain after X‑ray.

An ankle CT scan itself is very quick—often only a few seconds to a few minutes of image acquisition. Including check-in, positioning, possible contrast administration, and brief post-scan checks, expect about 10–30 minutes at the imaging center. Complex cases or waiting times may extend the visit. CT shows cortical detail better than X‑ray and can guide biopsy or surgery, though MRI is more sensitive for early marrow or soft‑tissue changes. Radiation exposure is a consideration.
