CT SCAN ABDOMEN

An abdominal CT scan produces detailed cross-sectional images of the liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, bowel, bladder, blood vessels and surrounding fat. It detects masses, tumors, cysts, inflammation, abscesses, organ injury, kidney or gallstones, bowel obstruction, perforation, and vascular problems like aneurysms. Contrast-enhanced scans also show blood flow and help stage cancers and guide interventions.

Before an abdominal CT: follow fasting instructions (usually 2–6 hours), drink any prescribed oral contrast on schedule, and tell staff about allergies, asthma, diabetes, kidney problems, or pregnancy. Bring a medication list; you may be asked to stop metformin temporarily if IV contrast is used. Remove metal jewelry, wear loose clothing, arrive early for paperwork, and follow technologist instructions during the scan.

A CT scan with iodine contrast is a computed tomography test in which an iodine-based dye is injected or ingested to improve visualization of blood vessels, organs, and abnormal tissue. The contrast highlights differences in tissue density, aiding detection of tumors, infections, vascular problems, and injuries. Risks include allergic reactions and kidney strain, so allergy history and kidney function are assessed beforehand.

CT scans use ionizing radiation, so they carry a small risk of radiation-related effects that is relatively higher in children because their tissues are more sensitive and they have longer lifespans. When medically necessary, benefits usually outweigh risks. Providers use pediatric dose protocols, shielding, and consider alternatives (MRI/ultrasound) to minimize exposure. Discuss necessity and options with your child’s clinician.

Timing varies by urgency and facility. In emergencies a radiologist often interprets an abdominal CT immediately or within minutes to hours. For routine outpatient scans, preliminary results are commonly available within 24–48 hours, with a formal written report usually finalized within 24–72 hours. Some clinics provide same-day results; always check with the imaging center or your referring clinician for exact timing.

An abdominal CT scan typically costs: in the United States about $500–$3,000 (contrast or hospital settings can raise it to $700–$4,000); in the UK it’s free on the NHS but private scans run roughly £150–£800; in India prices commonly range ₹2,500–₹15,000.
