What is a COBALT Test ?
The cobalt test measures the amount of cobalt in your blood. Cobalt is a trace metal found naturally in food and as part of vitamin B12. Small amounts are normal and help support red blood cell and nerve function through vitamin B12. But high cobalt levels can harm the heart, nerves, thyroid, and hearing. Doctors use this test to check for metal exposure from implants or jobs, to investigate unexplained heart or nerve symptoms, or when metal poisoning is suspected. Results are compared with symptoms and other tests like kidney or thyroid checks. Levels can guide follow-up, implant checks, or treatment to reduce exposure.

Why Take a COBALT Test ?
COBALT is often part of a metal or trace element panel and is ordered when patients have metal implants, unexplained fatigue, numbness, heart symptoms, or suspected occupational exposure. It helps detect implant wear (metallosis), cobalt poisoning, and related heart or nerve damage. Abnormal levels can result from worn metal joints, workplace exposure, supplements, or reduced kidney clearance. A family history of implant complications may prompt closer monitoring.
