A typical 24‑hour urine chloride excretion in adults is about 110–250 mmol (mEq) per day. Values vary with dietary salt intake, fluid status, diuretic use and kidney function; lower or higher results warrant clinical correlation and sometimes repeat testing to assess hydration, medication effects or renal handling of electrolytes.

High urine chloride commonly reflects high dietary salt or recent use of chloride‑wasting diuretics (loop or thiazide). It can also be seen with some kidney tubular disorders or mineralocorticoid excess and is used to evaluate acid–base and electrolyte problems. If unexpectedly high, review medications, recent diet and fluid status, and see a clinician for blood tests (electrolytes, renal function) and targeted kidney or endocrine evaluation.

24‑hour urine testing can detect biochemical markers for specific tumors: elevated catecholamines/metanephrines or vanillylmandelic acid suggesting pheochromocytoma (or neuroblastoma), increased 5‑hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5‑HIAA) indicating serotonin‑secreting carcinoid/neuroendocrine tumors, and urine monoclonal (Bence Jones) proteins or free light chains seen in multiple myeloma. It’s not a general cancer screen and needs physician interpretation.

Normal 24-hour urine results vary, but typical ranges are: total volume 800–2,000 mL; creatinine 600–2,000 mg/day (varies with sex/muscle mass); protein <150 mg/day; calcium about 100–300 mg/day; sodium roughly 40–220 mmol/day; potassium about 25–125 mmol/day. Values outside these ranges may indicate kidney, metabolic, or dietary issues—discuss with your clinician.

No single serum chloride value definitively indicates kidney failure. Normal chloride is about 98–106 mmol/L. Mild deviations are common; marked hyperchloremia (for example >110–115 mmol/L) or severe hypochloremia (for example <80 mmol/L) suggest significant acid–base or fluid disturbances and possible renal involvement. Confirm kidney failure by checking creatinine and eGFR and consult a clinician.
