Chikungunya IGG Test

A positive chikungunya IgG indicates past exposure or infection: IgG antibodies typically develop weeks after infection and can persist for months to years, often suggesting some degree of immunity. It does not indicate an active or recent infection (IgM or PCR detect those). Interpret results with symptoms and timing, and see a clinician if you have current fever, severe joint pain, or diagnostic concerns.

Costs vary by country and provider. In India, private labs commonly charge roughly ₹400–1,500 for a chikungunya IgG test. In the United States, private labs typically charge about $30–$150. In the UK, testing is usually free for eligible patients through public services; private testing may cost roughly £30–£100. Prices depend on the lab, location, and insurance/coverage.

A positive IgG antibody means your immune system has previously encountered that specific virus, bacteria, or vaccine and produced longer‑lasting antibodies. It usually indicates past infection or prior immunization rather than current acute illness and often suggests some degree of protection. Interpretation depends on timing, the test’s accuracy and the specific disease; false positives or waning immunity are possible, so discuss results with your clinician.

Chikungunya is confirmed by molecular tests (RT‑PCR) detecting viral RNA during the first week of illness, and by serology: IgM antibodies appear from about day 4–5 and indicate recent infection, while IgG indicates past exposure. Neutralization assays (PRNT) can confirm results and help distinguish chikungunya from related viruses. Routine blood tests (CBC) may support diagnosis but are not specific.

If chikungunya is confirmed, rest, stay hydrated and use paracetamol/acetaminophen for fever and pain; avoid NSAIDs or aspirin until dengue is excluded. Monitor for warning signs (extreme weakness, severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding) and seek prompt medical care if they occur. Protect yourself from mosquito bites for the first week to prevent spread. For persistent joint pain, follow up with your doctor for pain control and physiotherapy.

IgM and IgG are antibody classes with different roles. IgM is the first antibody produced in an acute infection, forming pentamers that strongly agglutinate pathogens and activate complement. IgG appears later, is the most abundant serum antibody, and provides long-term immunity and memory. IgG is a monomer that neutralizes pathogens, opsonizes for phagocytosis, and can cross the placenta to protect the fetus.
