A vascular Doppler test is a non-invasive ultrasound that uses the Doppler effect to assess blood flow in arteries and veins. A handheld probe or duplex scanner detects flow direction, speed and waveforms to identify blockages, narrowing, clots or venous insufficiency. It’s painless, uses gel on the skin, and helps diagnose peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis and guide treatment plans.

Costs vary by country and setting. In the United States a carotid Doppler (carotid duplex) typically bills between $200 and $1,200 (insurance and facility affect out‑of‑pocket cost). In the UK it’s provided free on the NHS; private clinics charge roughly £60–£200. In India the test commonly costs about ₹500–₹3,000. A Doppler test on the brain — typically a transcranial Doppler ultrasound — uses a handheld ultrasound probe at skull “windows” to measure blood flow velocity in the major cerebral arteries. It’s non-invasive, quick, and helps detect vasospasm, reduced flow, emboli, stroke risk and monitor cerebral circulation in conditions like sickle cell disease or after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Results are operator-dependent.

A cerebrovascular ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves (Doppler ultrasound) to visualize and measure blood flow in the neck and brain arteries. It includes carotid duplex and transcranial Doppler studies to detect narrowing, plaques, clots, or abnormal flow patterns. If a Doppler ultrasound is positive it indicates abnormal blood flow—commonly a clot (deep vein thrombosis) or significant arterial narrowing. Symptoms of a blocked artery in the leg (peripheral artery disease) include cramping, aching or tiredness in the calf, thigh or hip when walking (intermittent claudication); pain at rest; numbness or weakness; cold, pale or bluish skin; slow-healing sores or ulcers on the foot or toes; reduced or absent pulses in the leg; and hair loss or shiny skin on the lower leg.
