BISMUTH

Bismuth compounds (most commonly bismuth subsalicylate) are used to relieve diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, heartburn and upset stomach by coating the gut and reducing inflammation. They also have mild antibacterial effects and are used in combination therapy to help eradicate Helicobacter pylori and treat peptic ulcers. Bismuth salts appear in some topical and minor wound products for local antiseptic and odor-control purposes.

In the stomach, bismuth compounds coat and protect irritated mucosa and ulcers, creating a protective barrier. They have mild antimicrobial and anti‑adhesive activity against H. pylori, reduce inflammation and secretions, and can bind bacterial toxins — helping relieve dyspepsia and diarrhoea. Bismuth is often used with antibiotics to improve H. pylori eradication.

Bismuth is an element, but in medicine it’s often encountered as bismuth subsalicylate — the active compound in some over-the-counter stomach remedies used for indigestion, nausea, heartburn and diarrhea. Other pharmaceutical forms include colloidal bismuth subcitrate; these bismuth compounds act locally in the gut rather than being absorbed systemically. They are generally considered safe when used as directed.

Bismuth is a naturally occurring element in the Earth’s crust, typically found in minerals such as bismuthinite (Bi2S3) and bismite (Bi2O3). It commonly occurs in hydrothermal veins, pegmatites, and as an accessory element in lead, tin, tungsten, silver, and copper ores. Commercial bismuth is usually recovered as a byproduct of mining and refining these other metals; it is relatively scarce.
