BETA 2 GLYCOPROTEIN 1 - IGM

A positive beta‑2 glycoprotein 1 (β2‑GPI) IgM means your immune system has produced antiphospholipid antibodies targeting β2‑GPI. This can be linked to antiphospholipid syndrome, increasing risk of blood clots and pregnancy loss. A single positive may be transient; repeat testing after 12 weeks and clinical correlation (history of thrombosis or pregnancy complications) plus other antibody tests are needed to confirm diagnosis and guide management.

High beta‑2 glycoprotein (anti‑β2GPI) indicates antiphospholipid antibodies. Persistent elevation suggests antiphospholipid syndrome, which increases risk of blood clots, recurrent miscarriage, stroke and pregnancy complications. Temporary rises can follow infection or drugs; diagnosis needs repeat testing at least 12 weeks apart plus clinical evidence. Discuss results with a specialist — further tests and possible anticoagulation may be recommended.

Anti–β2 glycoprotein I (IgM) is generally considered negative if <20 units (MPL or U/mL), borderline/indeterminate roughly 20–40 units, and positive at ≥40 units (or above the 99th percentile). For antiphospholipid syndrome assessment, a medium-to-high positive result (≥40 or >99th percentile) should be confirmed by repeat testing at least 12 weeks apart.

A negative beta-2 glycoprotein I IgG means no detectable IgG antibodies against beta-2 glycoprotein I on that test, which lowers the likelihood of antiphospholipid syndrome. It does not completely rule it out because antibodies can be transient or develop later. If clinical suspicion (unexplained clots or recurrent pregnancy loss) remains, repeat testing after 12 weeks and check other antiphospholipid tests.

A positive IgM antibody test usually indicates recent or current infection because IgM is the first antibody produced in an immune response. It suggests early or acute-phase exposure, but can reflect recent vaccination or cross-reactivity, and false positives occur. Confirmation with PCR, repeat antibody testing for IgG seroconversion, clinical evaluation, and follow-up testing is recommended.

Lupus anticoagulant is an antibody that raises the risk of blood clots despite its name. It can be transient, but persistent positivity is linked to antiphospholipid syndrome and higher chances of DVT, stroke and pregnancy loss. How serious it is depends on symptoms and clot history; confirmed cases usually need specialist follow‑up and may require anticoagulation and risk‑reduction measures.
